Meet Sheila MacDonald
Sheila MacDonald Sheila MacDonald is a speech-language pathologist, clinician, author, researcher and educator with over 30 years’ experience in assessing and treating individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI). Her clinical experience spans from acute care, through to community, and return to work and school. She is the author of two standardized tests of higher level cognitive-communication skills: The Functional Assessment of Verbal Reasoning and Executive Strategies for adults (FAVRES) and the student version (SFAVRES), as well as the Cognitive-Communication Checklist for Acquired Brain Injury (CCCABI) and other publications related to assessment, treatment, and evidence-based practice. She has participated in the development of clinical standards and practice statements for speech-language pathologists working in the field of brain injury (e.g. www.caslpo.com).
Sheila is an invited speaker, consultant, and educator on topics including assessment and treatment methods, and vocational and academic re-entry. Her clinical short course for speech-language pathologists, the Cognitive-Communication Course for Acquired Brain Injury (CCCABI Course) has been endorsed nationally and internationally. She consults with clinicians and researchers worldwide and collaborates with individuals with lived experience of brain injury to advocate for access to full life participation. Clinically she partners with individuals, their families, and team members to optimize communication competence in social, academic, and workplace settings after brain injury. This work has led her to understand the need for assessment measures that are sensitive to the cognitive and communication challenges faced by those we serve.
